Introduction to mounting and soldering of BGAs/QFNs

The expansion in the use of BGAs and QFNs across the industry has resulted in many companies having to consider whether or not they want to invest in this field of work. Inevitably new practices and techniques can appear daunting, and implementing changes can be challenging. Familiarising new and more experienced staff to new practices through an introductory course such as this can reap rewards, helping operators feel more confident, supervisors be more assured and even designers better prepared for working with these component types.

This course has been designed for staff new to solder BGAs and QFNs.

Course Overview

This one-day introductory course provides a practical understanding of carrying out the fitting of complex components such as BGAs and QFNs. The knowledge gained is, essentially, understanding and applying techniques and interpreting X-ray images.

This course explores the fitting of components to PCBs by means of practical workshop demonstrations followed by hands-on sessions designed to provide practical experience for students, utilising the facilities in The Electronics Group’s Technology Centre, including the ERSA 550 and 650 hand-placement rework machines, as used in the industry.

Subjects covered

Subjects covered include:

•    Workshop practices
•    Introduction to BGA and QFN components
•    Types of PCBs
•    Fitting components to PCBs
•    Practical soldering skills

On completion of the course attendees will receive The Electronics Group’s Certificate of Attendance.

Who should attend

Those likely to be involved in the removal and fitting of BGAs will benefit from this course. It is designed for those new to this field of work as well as those with some practical experience looking to sharpen their skills through exposure to best practice techniques.
