Introduction to Soldering Surface Mount Devices – 1 Day Course

For many staff, moving from conventional through-hole soldering to working with surface mount components can appear daunting. New techniques are required and new skills have to be mastered. This course will raise the confidence of staff approaching working with surface mount devices for the first time as well as ensure that more experienced staff are applying the correct techniques to avoid costly failures.

The course has been designed for staff unfamiliar or new to soldering SMDs as well as anyone looking to improve their knowledge and is, ideally, followed by The Electronics Group’s Advanced Soldering Surface Mount Devices (includes reworking techniques) course for enhancing skills and understanding.

Course overview

This one day introductory course provides basic skills in carrying out hand-soldering for mounting surface mount devices up to QFPs. The knowledge gained is, essentially, understanding and applying soldering techniques and recognising the quality of the finished soldered connection.

Following an introduction to the components involved and basic workshop practices, this course provides practical skills in mounting surface mount devices.

Components which are new to the industry are covered in this course.

Subjects covered include:

  • Workshop practices
  • Introduction to surface mount devices (SMDs)
  • Fundamentals of soldering SMDs
  • Types of printed circuit boards (PCBs) and related practices
  • Tools and equipment
  • Practical soldering skills

On completion of the course attendees will receive The Electronics Group’s Certificate of Attendance. Completion of the course provides an excellent basis for students to move on to The Electronics Group’s two-day Advanced Hand Soldering of Surface Mount Devices (includes reworking techniques) course.

Who should attend?

Both those new to mounting surface mount devices  as well as those with practical experience in this field looking to sharpen their skills through exposure to best practice techniques will benefit from this course.
This course leads on to The Electronics Group’s Advanced Soldering of Surface Mount Devices (includes reworking techniques) course for advancing skills and understanding.

Further details

Introduction to Soldering Surface Mount Devices is 1 day.
